Intern – Transit Service Planning

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates (N\N) is seeking a highly organized, independent and motivated intern for its growing Boston office primarily to support the firm’s practice in transit service planning. In addition, the intern may be asked to support paratransit and taxi projects, multi-modal transportation and non-motorized transportation planning projects, and smart parking and transportation demand management projects. The intern will have the opportunity to work with and be mentored by experienced transit and transportation planners.

Responsibilities

Intern responsibilities will likely include research, data collection and analysis, GIS mapping, route performance analysis, field work and other support assistance to our transit planning staff.

Qualifications

In preferential order, the ideal candidate would be someone who (1) holds a Masters in Planning or Civil Engineering with a specialization in transportation planning; (2) has completed his/her first year of Masters in Planning or Civil Engineering program and who is focusing on transportation planning; or (3) has a BA in a related field and is interested in gaining experience prior to entering such a Masters program. Solid experience with MS Excel and GIS is required. Other software skills a plus. Above all, we are looking for someone who has a passion for public transit, and is interested in making public transit better for our clients and their constituents.

Internship Duration

Ideally, the internship would last from 6 to 12 months, and possibly lead to a permanent Associate Planner position at Nelson\Nygaard.

Senior Associate – Paratransit and Coordination/Mobility Management

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates (N\N) seeks a senior planner experienced in paratransit planning, human service transportation coordination and mobility management.  With a nationally-recognized practice in these areas Nelson\Nygaard is committed to improving access and mobility, especially for persons who are dependent on specialized and/or demand-responsive transportation.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as part of a highly regarded professional team and will assume key roles in project management, proposal writing / business development, and staff development.  While the successful candidate will be based in the firm’s Boston office, he or she will have the opportunity to work closely with the staff in our other east coast offices (New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, and Jacksonville) and our west coast offices (San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle). Candidates must be willing to travel (on average 2-4 overnight stays per month plus numerous day trips) and must have a valid Driver’s License.

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a Master’s Degree in city or urban planning and at least 6 years experience of increasingly responsible experience in consulting, planning, and/or operations in the following areas:

  • Paratransit Planning – ADA, Dial-A-Ride, Demand-Responsive Transportation
  • Coordination of Human Service Transportation / Community Transportation and Mobility Management

A minimum of three additional years of work experience in these areas can substitute for the Master’s degree requirement.  All work experience can be in either the public or private sectors.    Absent private sector experience with business development, the candidate should present evidence of relevant skills or background that could lead to business development acumen.

In addition, candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent written, verbal and analytical skills as well as the ability to manage projects within budget; work with a variety of stakeholders, customers and members of the public; prepare reports, presentations and successful proposals; perform technical analysis and feasibility studies; facilitate groups of stakeholders; make presentations; and mentor junior staff.

Salary and Benefits

All employees are paid an hourly rate.  The annual salary range equivalent for this position is $80,000 to $100,000, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Benefits include fully paid health and dental insurance, a 401K/profit-sharing program, flexible work hours, and Personal Time Off (PTO).
