NYCDOT is seeking an unpaid graduate intern in the Capital Planning Unit for the Spring 2014 semester, with the potential for extension into a paid Summer internship. Capital Planning is responsible for planning the capital program, prioritizing projects, working with stakeholders to develop project scopes of work, developing cost estimates, obtaining OMB (Office of Management and Budget), and other approvals and connecting projects with funding sources.
Students will assist in researching, developing and coordinating a variety of projects that will help him/her gain an understanding of the Capital Program process as well as experience in project planning from initial concept to leveraging funding sources, coordinating with DOT units and the public, and preparing final projects to be submitted to the Department of Design and Construction (DDC). Specific tasks will include assisting Borough Planners with developing project scopes; budget forms, and cost estimates; and assisting the project managers/borough planners with various tasks supporting Capital Program Management’s day-to-day operations.
Daily duties will include tasks such as assisting in field visits, street title searches, developing conceptual designs, and drafting project narratives; mapping existing and potential projects; participating in meetings, investigating and drafting responses to project requests or roadway concerns from residents and/or elected officials.
The internship will allow the candidate to make important contributions to the City while developing their professional skills. The candidate will gain valuable experience working on a team and producing materials leading to the initiation of citywide policy and projects.
