Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated intern for its New York City office. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to help build Nelson\Nygaard’s practice of planning multi-modal transportation for livable communities. Nelson\Nygaard’s innovative work emphasizes creative problem solving, community engagement, and results-focused strategies that serve our clients’ goals and objectives long after our plans are delivered. A demonstrable understanding of transportation’s role in livable-community development is a must in any candidate.
Intern responsibilities depend on specific needs of projects that are being undertaken at any given time, but generally include research, analytical writing, data collection, spreadsheet analysis, field work, and general office support. Although travel requirements are typically modest, candidates must be willing to travel when necessary.
The ideal candidate is someone who holds a Masters in Planning or equivalent degree with a specialization in transportation planning; has completed his/her first year of Masters in Planning program and is focusing on transportation planning; or has a BSc/MSC in a related field and is interested in gaining experience prior to entering a Master’s program. Other relevant degrees include transportation engineering, transportation operations, urban/city/regional planning, urban design and landscape architecture. Above all, we are looking for someone who has a passion for sustainable transportation planning, and is interested in making communities better for our clients and their constituents.
Potential candidates must demonstrate excellent skills in writing, data analysis, oral presentation and problem solving. The candidate must be able to demonstrate basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Additional experience with GIS, graphics (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp), modeling (Synchro, TransCAD) or database analysis will be considered favorably. Potential candidates may be asked to demonstrate their writing and oral presentation skills. Candidates should be available to start immediately.
