Job Announcement
Performs overall project management and contract administration for multiple multimodal transportation improvement projects throughout the County. Provides engineering design and review of project plans designed by outside consultants. Ensures plans, plats, and specifications conform to all applicable engineering standards and requirements. Reviews and negotiates design contracts. Prepares and monitors project schedules. Is responsible for preparing, updating, and monitoring project budget and timely completion of assigned projects on schedule. Reviews and recommends payment of invoices. Coordinates project design with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), County, and other regulatory/approval agencies for approvals and necessary permits. Participates in citizens information meetings and/ or conducts them and responds to citizen’s issues and concerns. Attends project-related design field inspections, utility field inspections and pre-construction meetings. Provides engineering support during land acquisition phase and construction phase. Off-site meetings and visits to project sites may require the operation of a personal and/or County vehicle. Performs other duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor’s degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver’s license
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver’s license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Seven or more years of experience in hands on design of multi-modal transportation improvement projects including bike & pedestrian walkway/trail facilities, Spot & intersection improvements, Roadway design, etc.
- Experience and working knowledge of federal and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) design standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Experience in the use of computer applications and software, including MS Office, MS Project, AutoCAD Land Development Desktop, AutoCAD Civil3D and/or Microstation.
- Ability to understand roadway and other public improvement design plans
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced collaborative team environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents.
Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Work requires performing tasks in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County to provide coverage, attend meetings and trainings. Ability to operate a motor vehicle Ability to perform field investigations of transportation design projects. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
