As a Planner, you will contribute to projects, lead analysis, work directly with our clients, represent Toole Design in project and stakeholder meetings, and reinforce our reputation as trusted experts. You’ll work with other planners, landscape architects, urban designers, and engineers to deliver a variety of exciting project types focused on making places and travel experiences better for everyone, including local, regional, and state-wide active transportation plans, Vision Zero plans, systemic safety analyses, urban design studies, trail planning and design projects, online mapping and data science initiatives, equitable public engagement activities, Safe Routes to School studies, and national research projects.

We are conveniently located just outside of Washington DC in downtown Silver Spring, two blocks from the Silver Spring Metrorail/MARC Station. - A bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, engineering, or a related field; additional relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
- At least one year of planning experience at a consulting firm, public entity, non-profit, or higher learning institution
- Strong writing skills and experience working as a support and/or lead writer for technical documents
- Experience working in Adobe Creative Suite and/or other design programs, creating graphics and maps, visualizing data, and laying out documents in a clear and compelling way
- Demonstrated track record of managing workload and deadlines, balancing tasks, consistently and reliably delivering on commitments, and communicating and collaborating with others to deliver high quality results
It would be a plus if you have:
- Personal and professional experience working on pedestrian and bicycle issues
- Experience conducting equitable and inclusive public outreach and engagement
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams
- Experience taking ownership of and responsibility for tasks or projects
- Experience with ArcGIS and/or QGIS
- Proficiency using Excel for data and demographic analysis
- Fluency in Spanish

As the point person for messaging our brand via social media, our website, and other channels, the Communications Specialist sets the tone and voice for the entire company, including our office locations in the United States and Canada, ensuring that Toole Design’s values, capabilities, and culture are clearly conveyed in our internal and external communications. The Communications Specialist also works with Project Managers and Clients to develop and deliver effective communications strategies for a wide variety of planning, design, and engineering projects. This might include developing a communications plan, social media strategy, writing newsletter content, or crafting campaigns as part of transportation projects at all scales. The Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Strategy and works closely with senior leadership.
