Job Announcement

Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area is seeking a highly motivated and qualified transportation professional to work across multiple disciplines in the transportation planning field.

Responsibilities include:

Reviewing and evaluating the transportation impacts of land development applications and proposed land use changes;
Assists in the development and implementation of comprehensive plan policies and design standards;
Identifying transportation improvements needed to serve the proposed uses in coordination with county plans and policies;
Coordination between applicants, county staff, VDOT, the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, and the public to reach workable solutions to complex challenges;
Reviewing and evaluating traffic analyses, and other technical documents
Preparing detailed reports and presentations;
Participation in meetings with other County agencies, the development community, citizens, advisory groups, task forces, and elected officials;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field. 

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver’s license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer. Off-site meetings and site visits may require the operation of a vehicle.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong background in land use and transportation planning;
  • Experience in reviewing site plans and evaluating transportation impacts of land development applications;
  • Ability to read and understand detailed technical plan drawings to ensure compliance with County regulations;
  • Experience in coordinating with local, state, and federal government entities, as well as elected officials;
  • Knowledge and experience in traffic operations, multi-modal transportation planning for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders and drivers as well as site-specific and small area planning and coordination;
  • Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong negotiation skills;
  • Professional license in engineering or planning;
  • Strong analytical skills, excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, the development community, colleagues, and the general public;
  • Ability to help create and maintain a people-first culture


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items less than 25 pounds in weight. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Job Announcement

Serves as a communications professional in a large transportation agency that includes a large fixed-route transit system (Fairfax Connector). Develops and implements comprehensive digital, online and social media communication programs in a deadline-driven environment. Develops and manages content for agency websites and serves as a lead publisher for the agency’s social media accounts. Manages the agency’s web content accessibility requirements. Provides customer service to the public through various communication platforms. Participates in the planning and execution of internal and external communications and program marketing. Assists with Fairfax Connector passenger information, which includes updates and alerts for service interruptions and schedule changes through various online platforms. Implements online and social media communications strategies for countywide Transportation Demand Management (TDM) issues and initiatives, which include Fairfax Connector bus service, ridesharing, employer outreach and other programs designed to reduce single-occupant travel. Coordinates projects with partner organizations such as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG). Assists with media relations and events management and responds as essential personnel in emergencies. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Off-site meetings and visits to project sites may require the operation of a personal or county vehicle. Duties are performed under the direction of the department’s Head of Communications. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Experience marketing transportation programs or services. Familiarity with multi-modal transportation, especially transit planning and operations. Knowledge of fundamentals of graphic design software, photo editing tools, and general publication standards.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write for multimedia.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced collaborative team environment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County to provide coverage, attend meetings and trainings. Conducts periodic field observations requiring standing, riding, and exposure to the elements (weather).
