The transportation industry, like many industries dominated by technically proficient and well-educated people, must take steps to develop new entrants to the profession now more than ever before. Large age gaps between management levels can create issues for incremental leadership and career development of budding professionals. Organizations like Young Professionals in Transportation help accelerate the growth of their members, encourage active participation in the community, and provide valuable networking opportunities for building industry relationships. My goal is to uphold these ideals through contributions to the Atlanta YPT chapter.
Before starting graduate school Georgia Tech last fall, I served as a Civil Engineers Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy. While I was not introduced to YPT, I participated in the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) and held the board position of secretary at the Coastal Bend Post in Corpus Christi, Texas. My first experience with Young Professionals in Transportation came while attending last year’s Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting. After attending a social in Washington, D.C., I joined the Atlanta chapter and have since participated in several events. I see the value created by the organization and would like to take a more active role in ensuring it builds and sustains an upward trajectory. It is imperative that we, as leaders in our field, foster an environment that enables the sharing of knowledge and encourages members to connect to professionals both internal and external to the organization. My goal is to help grow membership levels and increase meaningful participation at events.
I hope the board will consider my application for Treasure/Vice Chair for Finance or simply as an At-Large Director for special projects. I enjoy book keeping and have experience with budgeting projects as well as business coursework in my graduate studies. As an at-large director, I would be excited to lead special projects inspired by the board. I have helped plan golf tournaments for professional organization fundraising in the past and would be interested in gauging potential participation for one hosted by YPT.
