The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) seeks multiple outstanding statisticians to join our family. BTS is the Principal Federal Statistical Agency within the Department of Transportation (DOT), leading the department in data analytics, survey design, and data driven research. Mandated by congress, BTS provides independent, objective, comprehensive and relevant information to decision makers and the public on the extent and use of the Nations’ transportation systems, the system performance, and the systems impacts on society and the environment. 
The statisticians have opportunities to guide national surveys, lead research on statistical methodology to enhance data quality and usability, direct innovations to improve efficiency and timeliness of data collection and production, and represent BTS in various settings.
Applications in all areas of statistics and data science are welcome. Individuals with experiences evaluating statistical programs, applying various statically methodologies to improve data collection and production, and having a strong research background are most desired.

These positions are telework eligible. BTS is located in the DOT Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Position Overview

VDOT’s Office of Public-Private Partnerships is seeking a Program Manager to lead identification and development of innovative solutions and technology-based concepts to enhance the efficiency of transportation system in the Commonwealth. The selected candidate will coordinate with other VDOT divisions and state agencies to identify alternative project delivery models to implement innovative solutions and new technologies; manage project development activities such as financial and technical feasibility analysis to develop a compelling business case; and lead the procurement and implementation of a project.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience working in alternative project delivery models, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), transportation technologies, project finance, autonomous vehicles, and smart facilities or other relevant fields. Familiarity with transportation challenges and the emerging technologies utilized in the transportation field. Experience with project finance and Public-Private Partnerships.

Skill in financial analysis, business case development, and report writing. Knowledge of project and program development. Entrepreneurial mindset. Problem solver and independent thinker. The Maryland Department of Transportation The Secretary’s Office (MDOT TSO) is seeking a dynamic individual for the position of Regional Planner.  This position has 5 main responsibilities:

  • Represents the Department at policy committees of the Baltimore and Southern Maryland Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), called the Baltimore Region Transportation Board (BRTB) and Calvert-St. Mary’s MPO (C-SMMPO), to ensure they comply with federal laws and regulations; and for consistency with the goals and policies of the State of Maryland;
  • Coordinates development of various plans and programs (with the MDOT Business Units), including long-range transportation plans, work programs, and short-range improvement programs, for BTRB and C-SMMPO;
  • Prepares briefing papers or letters for the Director of the Office of Planning and the Secretary on various issues as required;
  • Provides input to the A-95 Clearinghouse process and local plan review, including coordination with modes as appropriate; and
  • Provides support and follow-up for Pre-Tour and Tour meetings.

The current vacancy exists at MDOT TSO, in Hanover, Maryland in Anne Arundel County.


EDUCATION:  A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of experience in administrative or professional work.  Three (3) years must have involved experience in metropolitan and/or statewide transportation planning and have experience working with metropolitan planning organizations.  One (1) year of this experience must have involved one or more of the following:  the supervision of other employees, overseeing and coordinating the general operations of a unit, applying rules and regulations, or exercising responsibility for the development of policies or procedures.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral);
  • Excellent leadership skills;
  • Knowledge of fundamental metropolitan and statewide transportation planning
    principles, practices, and terminology; and
  • A Masters degree in Planning, Transportation, Public Administration, Engineering,Geography or a closely related field from an accredited college or university (AICP accreditation is desirable).
