Becoming a YPT leader starts with you. If you are considering taking the next step in developing your professional career network and or wanting to provide your skills to other YPT chapters, this is a great way to expand on both. Take it from Jaime McKay, Director of Sponsorship and Jerome Horne, Communications Deputy Chair, who have recently been listed as a Mass Transit Top 40 Under 40 award! Both serve on our International Board, but also help to lead within their YPT local chapters.


To run for any YPT Board of Director position (international or local chapter) or vote in the elections you must:

Already be or become a paid YPT Member by October 1, 2020, 11:59 PM EST 

If you think you are already a Member but are unsure, you can check your membership status

Timeline for voting process 

This year we are implementing a new timeline for all YPT Chair Board Members, which extends your leadership till January 1st of the calendar year. 

October 1, 2020 – Candidate statements are due by 11:59 PM EDT.

October 19, 2020 – Election ballots will be sent out by YPT International to eligible voting Members for all Chapter and International elections by 9:00 AM EDT. 

October 30, 2020 – Online elections close at 11:59 PM EDT. International and Chapter Board members and nominees will be notified of election results shortly thereafter.

January 1, 2021 – New Board term for all winning candidates begins

Timeline for Board Members

Term limits for all (International & Local) YPT Board positions is one year. The term runs from January 1, 2021 to  December 31, 2021.

YPT International Board of Director Positions

What exactly does being on the Board of Directors entail? Directors typically offer a time commitment of 3-5 hours per week.  Directors must be able to call into monthly Board of Directors meetings and may be asked to attend a yearly Board meeting.  

Chair: The Chair serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization and serves as the official face of YPT-International. The Chair is responsible for administering monthly board meetings, overseeing day-to-day implementation of the international by-laws, and supervising international board positions. 

Deputy Chair: The Deputy Chair assists the Chair in administering the international board, sets up monthly board meetings, conducts the subsequent year’s election process, and conducts annual report. In the absence of the Chair, the Deputy Chair acts in the official capacity of the Chair and performs all duties of that office.

Director of Administration: The Director of Administration records minutes for all monthly board meetings, oversees international awards and other major activities and keeps accurate records of the organization. 

Director of Communications: The Director of Communications manages YPT-International’s social media pages, updates YPT-International’s website,and sends official YPT-International e-mails.

Director of Finance: The Director of Finance collects individual dues payments and redistributes to chapters, records and maintains accurate financial records, pays organization bills in a timely fashion, manages organization payment systems, seeks opportunities to best utilize existing financial resources, expands revenue streams, develops annual budget, and provides monthly updates to the International Board. 

Director of Programs: The Director of Programs plans and oversees events in conjunction with major conferences, supports chapter programming (especially when major conferences are held near chapters), and coordinates events with the Director of Finance and the Director of Membership. 

Director of Membership: The Director of Membership monitors YPT membership numbers, grants administration access to the Contact Relationship Management System (CiviCRM), sets up new chapters in database, removes duplicate membership from the membership database, and assists chapters in using CiviCRM. 

Director of Chapter Development: The Director of Chapter Development communicates with local chapter leadership, holds monthly chapter calls, supports interested individuals in establishing new YPT chapters, assists chapters with day-to-day chapter management, monitors chapters with low or changing membership numbers, and serves as a liaison between chapter leadership and International Directors. 

Director of Sponsorship: The Director Sponsorship solicits and maintains international sponsors, administers and keeps up-to-date sponsorship levels, and provides accurate sponsorship information to the Director of Finance for budget planning.
