Who We Are
The Boston chapter of Young Professionals in Transportation (YPT) is dedicated to fostering career development of young professionals in the transportation field.
Our chapter was formed in September 2010 to enhance professional development among young transportation practitioners and future leaders. YPT was formed in 2007 as a national organization, headquartered in Washington, D.C. and has since grown to include chapters in many large cities in the U.S. Our goals are threefold:
1. Professional Development: Provide a regular series of seminars from leading individuals or teams in the transportation field.
2. Fellowship: Provide an ongoing forum for mutual support and interaction between young transportation professionals, especially for those starting their careers.
3. Networking: Provide networking opportunities and seminars to help young professionals advance their careers and share innovative ideas.
What We Do
Networking Events – These events are a great way to get to know your fellow transportation professionals and students in a relaxed, informal setting. We meet at various bars and restaurants in the Boston area. Networking events generally feature an invited Distinguished Guest, a leader in the transportation field. Boston events are free, unless otherwise noted.
Leadership Seminars – These seminars are a great way to meet and interact with distinguished leaders in the transportation field. Participants are encouraged to ask questions about the speakers’ work, career path, and for advice to today’s young professionals. Speakers invited to attend include prominent transportation practitioners and leaders.
Technical Tours – These tours offer members the opportunity to explore transportation in practice.
Board Meetings – These are regularly scheduled meetings of the YPT Boston Board of Directors. At these meetings, we discuss the group’s goals and strategies and plan events. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Check out agendas and minutes here.
Join YPT-Boston for one of our upcoming networking events, brownbags, or technical tours. All upcoming events are posted here, or click here to sign up on the YPT Friend list – our general mailing list.
On Thursday, March 21st, please join YPT Boston as we host Dr. Alexander Epstein, PhD, and Jonah Chiarenza, AICP, from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center for our March Lunch & Learn event: Redesigning Large Vehicles in Urban Environments to Improve Roadway Safety.
Large vehicles—including fire trucks, waste management vehicles, and freight trucks—count for a disproportionate, and growing, number of fatalities on U.S. streets. Despite making up only 4% of the U.S. vehicle fleet, in 2016 large trucks accounted for 6% of all pedestrian, 10% of all bicyclist, and 12% of vehicle occupant fatalities in the U.S. Over the past year, even as overall traffic fatalities slightly declined, fatalities involving large trucks increased 9%.
In December 2018, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) released Optimizing Large Vehicles for Urban Environments, a pair of in-depth reports that detail the effects of vehicle design on street safety, and the opportunities that public agencies—as significant purchasers of large vehicles—have to reduce traffic fatalities with improved vehicle design.
The March Lunch & Learn will feature a presentation on the subject, followed by Q&A with Dr. Alexander Epstein, PhD, and Jonah Chiarenza, AICP, from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center.
