Event Summary: Granville Bridge Connector Project

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Granville Bridge Presentation! The event was a huge success! A big shout out to the City of Vancouver presenters Alex Liaw and Dylan Passmore for their great presentation!

Originally designed for high-volume freeways that were never built, Granville Bridge presents significant accessibility and safety challenges for today’s urban context. The Granville Bridge Connector would address a major gap in the city’s active transportation network and serve some of the densest parts of the city. With City Council having recently approved the first phase of delivery, Dylan and Alex will discuss the exciting opportunities and challenges of retrofitting this icon of 1950’s thinking to better respond to the City’s growing needs. The project is key to accommodating the City’s growing number of people living, working, and playing in the city and region, and helping us meet our Climate Emergency Response targets.

About the Presenters:

Dylan Passmore is a senior plangineer with the City of Vancouver where he currently leads a handful of corridor design projects as well as accessible design practices in transportation.  Over his career in the public and private sectors, he has also led numerous active transportation design and planning projects across southern Ontario and Brazil.

Alex Liaw is a transportation engineer with the City of Vancouver and focuses on the design and implementation of active transportation projects that improve the safety and accessibility for people getting around Vancouver.

Alex Fraser Bridge Presentation

As a shift to an online based platform due to health and safety precautions, YPT Vancouver was able to partner up with R.F. Binnie & Associates to deliver the Alex Fraser Improvement Project presentation webinar style on June 3rd, 2020.

Serving as a critical connection for both commuters and goods movement in the transportation network, the Alex Fraser Bridge is a key segment in the Highway 91 corridor. The Alex Fraser Bridge Improvement Project included adding a seventh lane to the existing bridge, adding a new movable barrier counter-flow system to improve capacity and help reduce traffic congestion during peak periods, and installing 13 new dynamic message signs throughout the Lower Mainland to inform motorists of estimated delays on the four major Fraser River crossings.

A huge thank you to our presenters, Edmund Lee and Simon Church, for discussing the various aspects of the project’s background and schedule, as well as sharing their thoughts during the post-event Q&A session.

For those of you who may have missed the presentation, more information can be found on the project’s website. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/transportation-infrastructure/projects/alex-fraser-bridge

Vision

Our goal is to foster a community that provides networking and learning opportunities to our members and friends through activities like tours, social gatherings, and inspiring talks. We aim to make YPT Vancouver a fun and exciting place to connect with like-minded peers. We welcome practitioners, academics, and leaders from all areas of the industry from front line staff to administrators and everything in between. YPT Vancouver is also a place for students, recent graduates, and those wanting to explore what the industry has to offer.

Through field trips, happy hours, and the occasional seminar, we want to create opportunities for professionals to gather on an informal basis, which will, over time, foster a community that provides mentorship and networking opportunities. We envision partnering with existing organizations such as the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and Connecting Transportation Professionals (CTP) to deliver meaningful events. But most of all, we want to make YPT Vancouver fun!
