CAMPO Update with Ashby Johnson, Executive Director

Ashby Johnson is the Executive Director of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) which is the metropolitan planning organization for the six-county central Texas region and has served in that capacity since August 2014. Ashby also served as the Deputy MPO Director at the Houston-Galveston Area Council, which is the metropolitan transportation planning agency for the eight-county greater Houston region from May 2003 until July 2014. While in Houston, Ashby worked on major projects such as the Katy Freeway Expansion, major improvements to and rehabilitation of the US 290 Corridor, the IH 69 Segment Committees, and several studies with Houston METRO to examine the feasibility of transit-oriented development near rail and park and ride bus transit stops.
Prior to H-GAC, he spent eight years with the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Planning and one year with the Federal Transit Administration’s Office of Planning working on initiatives such as regulatory and guidance development for metropolitan and statewide planning for ISTEA and TEA-21, the transit New Starts Program, and the Metropolitan Capacity Building Program.
Prior to USDOT, Ashby spent five years with the Texas Department of Transportation in the Environmental Affairs and the Design Divisions. He holds a Bachelors degree in Government and a Masters in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin.
Ashby has been an active member of American Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) since 1996. He has served as a member of the AMPO Policy Committee for several years and also served as the Chair of the Policy Committee. He was elected to the AMPO Board as Vice Chair in January 2016. Ashby has also been active on Transportation Research Board Committees since 1996. He has served on the Metropolitan and Statewide Planning Committees and other TRB committees related to specific topics such as travel needs related to IH 95 in the northern Virginia area.

CapMetro North Austin Facility and Operations Control Center Tour
Join YPT-Austin for an all-access tour of the CapMetro North Austin Facility and Operations Control Center on September 4 or 5 from 11:30-12:30! This behind the scenes tour is for YPT Members only. We have a limited number of spaces available for each tour, so get your ticket today!
We’ll get a behind the scenes look at Capital Metro’s central point of communication which allows Capital Metro to follow transit routes, view video cams of bus and train stops, monitor overcrowding and traffic around vehicles, and watch incidents on vehicles in real time.
Plan your ride on CapMetro transit. Or carpool and park in the visitor’s parking spots at the CapMetro facility. We’ll meet in the front of the facility promptly at 11:30!

YPT-Austin and ASCE-YMF Austin Third Annual Party Barge!
Join YPT-Austin and ASCE-YMF Austin for the Annual Summer Party Barge! We will be renting a double decker barge with a sound system and a slide from the top. Tickets are $10 for any current YPT-Austin or ASCE YMF Austin member and $20 for Non-members. This is a BYOB event, must be 21 or older to attend. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks, and soft beverages provided. Places are limited and will be counted based on a first-come-first-served basis so make sure you get your tickets ASAP. May Roundtable with Randy Clarke, President & CEO of CapMetro
Join YPT-Austin on Thursday, May 9 from 11:30-1 pm for our May roundtable with Randy Clarke, President & CEO of CapMetro.
Randy Clarke has been the President and CEO of Capital Metro since March 2018. For the previous two years, he served as vice president of operations and member services at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) in Washington, D.C.
Prior to that, he spent seven years in various positions with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in Boston, including deputy chief operating officer.
Clarke was a key member of the senior leadership team at the MBTA, which provides 1.2 million trips daily. He was featured in Mass Transit magazine’s 2011 “Top 40 under 40” list, which highlights leaders in the transit industry nationwide.
He is a graduate of Acadia University in Nova Scotia and holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Southern Maine.

City of Austin Traffic Management Center Tour
Curious to find out who helps ease the traffic congestion you fight through every day? Want to learn more about the behind the scenes technology that improves traffic flow? YPT-Austin invites you to attend a technical tour of the City of Austin’s Traffic Management Center (TMC). Attendees will be provided a tour of the control center and signal cabinets by YPT’s own Robin Osborne and Ben Plett.
We are offering the tour the following days:
1. Tuesday, April 23 (12:00 – 1:00)
2. Wednesday, April 24 (12:00 – 1:00)

CTRMA Traffic Management Center Tour
Join YPT for an all-access tour of the Austin Region’s toll road management system! The tour will consist of a visit to CTRMA’s traffic management center where the guide will talk about the technology used along CTRMA’s toll roads, as well as give us a behind-the-scenes look at how the new MoPac variable toll lanes are managed. After visiting the traffic management center, the guide will lead the group onto the catwalk directly above a toll plaza along TX-183A, where we’ll be able to get a close look at the cameras and sensors that allow the toll plazas to accurately identify and correctly toll the vehicles that pass beneath.

PARKING – The TMC has limited visitor parking. There are paid parking spots on the street all around the TMC and across the street just past the Zach Scott Theater parking area.
