2016-2017 YPT-N Deputy Chair Nominee

Name: Ian Preston

Position for Nomination: Deputy Chair

My name is Ian Preston and I wish to serve on the YPT-Nashville Board. I have a transportation planning background and currently work in the Long Range Planning Division at TDOT. But as an active biker and bus commuter my passion for transportation issues is not limited to an office space. Nashville’s current transportation challenges and unprecedented population influx mark a critical time for young people to involve themselves in the future of our city’s transportation infrastructure. This organization promotes both sectors – and I want to lead it.

I have served on graduate-level urban planning committees in Memphis before moving back to Nashville, where I attended high school. Since my return I have made it a priority to follow transportation and development news around town and enjoy discussing these issues in formal and informal settings with community members, including my peers and other professionals. I am also knowledgeable about the current state of transportation affairs in Nashville. In sharing this knowledge and experience with our organization and its members, I believe we can address solutions to problems that matter (such as making our streets safer for biking, walking, and taking transit, reducing congestion and traffic fatalities, and exploring new innovations in technology). Through attending public events and meetings, I have formed solid relationships with individuals at the Nashville Civic Design Center, Nashville Junior Chamber, Walk Bike Nashville, Nashville MTA/RTA, and my own Neighborhood Association (Lockeland Springs) – all powerful forces working to promote diverse, safe, and equitable transportation options and overall livability for residents. If elected, I will help us partner with these organizations to bring a wider range of activities and viewpoints to our curriculum. I am serious about leading our efforts, while providing opportunities to learn and have fun. What can we gain from other cities and their YPT Chapters? How can our Board collaborate with and better represent our peers and residents to improve livability in our city? Let us explore answers to these questions!

Another of my passions is exploring ways to link transportation and housing. Young people are less inclined to ride transit to work if they can’t live close enough to jobs. How can planners and leaders incorporate mixed-income housing standards into the strategic transportation plan so that young people can afford to live in Nashville proper, where it makes sense to take transit? The cities that have figured it out boast efficient and more connected transportation networks that serve healthier and more diverse communities. Nashville must become one of those cities – and with the help of my leadership, YPT will help it along. Please consider me for the Chair of this Board.
