Salary:                                Starting salary:  $57,895 – Pay grade FS-18, Step 5

After successful completion of 1 year:  $61,347 – Pay grade FS-18, Step 7

Transportation Engineer Trainee positions are the Department of Transportation’s entry level engineering positions.

 

Eligibility:  These positions are open to candidates who possess a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management. Other minimum qualifications for this position are a general knowledge of basic transportation engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of computer aided design software and other computer applications; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details. A valid driver’s license may be required.

 

Positions are available at our Newington, Connecticut Headquarters and at other DOT locations throughout the State of Connecticut.  Although positions may become available throughout the Department, positions are more frequently available in Highway Design, Bridge Design, Traffic Engineering, and Construction.

 

Candidates who are appointed to this classification receive training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge, in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the Department.

 

Candidates are eligible for promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 without exam after successful completion of the two (2) year training program.  Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications of Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2 before the end of the training program must take and pass a competitive examination in order to be considered for early promotion.
